Uetliberg to Felsenegg

We tried to plan a hiking trip last weekend, but it seemed like we weren’t really feeling it so we ended up staying in Zürich. We also had our time change on that Saturday night/Sunday morning, so it made the already short day even shorter. Sunday turned out to be a really pretty (but chilly) Halloween day, so I wanted to hike up Uetliberg. It’s practically out our front door and across the street which makes it very convenient for impromptu hikes. I conscripted Cass and Luke to go with me, and we decided to hike up Uetliberg then over to Felsenegg, ride the gondola down, and take the train back to our apartment.

Most of these photos are of the same views, just at different elevation points along the hike. At the start of the hike, there were several uprooted trees blocking the hiking path. It made it a little tricky in spots. I usually take great care to not fall off the side of the mountain while navigating over/around the tree, then some Swiss person comes by and just jumps over it like it’s nothing.

We saw something called Ruine Manegg on the map, so we left the path and hiked up to see the cool “ruins.” Totally not worth it. The wiki says “Today there are hardly any visible remains on the surface.” That would have been nice to know. There was a bench up at the site, and that last photo is a pic of the lovely view from the bench.

More views, a view back toward where our apartment is located (the pic with the road in it) and we came across a little tea house on the mountain…

More views…. these are toward the south end of Zürichsee.

We finally made it to the top and started the walk from the top of Uetliberg south to Felsenegg, which is just a vantage point also up on the top of the mountain. There was a lot going on up there that I didn’t expect - like cows, a cemetery, fields, houses, farms, etc. We stopped to eat at the restaurant at Felsenegg, which is the same place we took our whole vacation crew to for fondue in summer 2018. We have since learned that fondue in the summer is verboten, as it is only a cold weather thing. This time I had goulash. That may be verboten now too, as they call weather in the single-digits C (40s F) fall - I call it winter though.

When we got done with our meal, we went to catch the gondola down to Adliswil, but the line was really long and it was getting pretty chilly. So we decided to hike down. Not exactly what we wanted to do at that point, but we could hike down quicker than it would take to wait in line. Here’s the hike details, the hike down is separate because I had already turned off my watch and had to restart. Then we caught the S4 in Adliswil, which drops us off practically across the street from our apartment.
