Weekend trip 2 Part 1: Luzern

This weekend, we decided to go hike in Engelberg with an overnight stop in Luzern. Our son is visiting, so we wanted to get him out to see more of Switzerland while he is here. When we arrived and checked into the hotel, the desk clerk directed us to a testing center to get a Covid certificate. Switzerland has enacted a requirement for Covid certificate for dine-in restaurants and some other establishments - and that includes hotel breakfast buffets. Cass had work to finish, so Luke and I went and got in line first. Not much to say about it other than it poured down rain on us AND it was the bad kind of test where they poke your brain. We got a few pictures before the rain started, and we got our test results and Covid certificate within about 15-20 minutes, good for 48 hrs.

We saw the Luzern arch, Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), which is a really old wooden bridge., and some of the old town (Altstadt). We stopped at a grocery store and went back to the hotel to dry out. We made reservations for a late dinner at a place that had gluten free hamburger buns (our son has celiac disease), Wolf Burger & Steak Bar.

Friday was supposed to be rainy, but when we got up the weather forecast had changed to partly cloudy/no rain. Luke and I went out and did some tourist stuff while Cass worked. We saw the Lion Monument and the Glacier Garden. In the Glacier Garden, there was a mirror maze and a wooden tower that you could climb for a nice view of Luzern. Don’t ask me how all the stuff in the Glacier Garden was related, because I couldn’t ever figure it out.

More walking, Luke said his feet were tired. We went to see the other really old wooden bridge in Luzern, the Spreuerbrücke. It was not nearly as photogenic as Kapellbrücke, and there wasn’t a really good angle for a photo. I took one of the entrance to the bridge, and you can see all of the flying insects that seemed to be swarming at that location. When Cass finished work, we caught a train to Engelberg.

These are the last few pics that I took outside the train station while we were waiting for the train to leave. We hadn’t really gone over to the lake part of Luzern, so these are the lake and the train station. Also, there are a couple of pics out the train window between Luzern and Engelberg.

When we got to Engelberg, we got my son to get a much-needed haircut and we went to dinner. The drinking age in Switzerland is 16 for beer and wine and 18 for spirits. This was Luke’s first legal drink (cider bc celiac) in Switzerland.

Ok, that was Luzern! Next post will have a TON of pictures of a really great hike UP the mountain in Engleberg!
